AUGMENTED DESKTOP

Redefining the desktop through spatial computing.

In 2018, Kinetic Theory internally developed a concept around the future of work. Augmented Reality presented a new usage paradigm but the use popular cases were either cheap gimmicks or enterprise only solutions that would not bring the technology to everyday users. We imagined and developed a prototype using the then new Magic Leap One, which would provide every day office workers Augmented Reality enhanced computing experiences, which did not force them to abandon their favorite and necessary work tools.

The Augmented Desktop is Kinetic Theory's first foray into internal R&D which could result in our own products. Similar concepts have since been publicized from both Facebook and Lenovo.

Prototyping the Experience

To explore this concept, we developed a prototype app for the Magic Leap connected to a laptop computer. The headset tracks it’s position relative to the computer screen and the the computer tells the Magic Leap what to draw.

The user is able to seamlessly move the mouse from the desktop into the augmented reality space.

Users are able to move any standard Windows components to and from the laptop.

The following are realtime video captures from our headset app.

Note: Because the camera is positioned over just the left eye, the AR overlay here is offset away from the laptop. Users are seeing a seamless edge to the laptop screen because of stereo image of the headset.
